Grupo Girão obtains Madeira’s first Animal Welfair® certification for egg production

Grupo Girão – Ovo Girão – has become the first company in the Autonomous Region of Madeira to obtain Animal Welfair® certification for the production of eggs from barn-raised hens.

The certificate was presented during the Porto Moniz Livestock Fair, marking a significant milestone for the regional poultry sector and for the assessment of animal welfare in Madeira.

Animal Welfair® certification is based on an objective assessment of the animals’ conditions and housing facilities, in accordance with the applicable requirements and protocols. The certification process includes an audit conducted by qualified professionals to verify compliance with the criteria established in the certification standard.

The Madeira-based company is engaged in the production, grading and packing of eggs and has been investing in the transition from caged production to barn-based production systems.

The public presentation of the certificate also helped to highlight the importance of independently assessing animal welfare practices and the increasing attention being given to this issue throughout the agri-food supply chain.
