JAS – Japan’s Organic Regulation

JAS (Japan Agricultural Standards) is the standard that governs the production, processing, labelling and marketing of organic products for the Japanese market.

It applies to products of plant and animal origin and sets out the requirements that must be met to access the Japanese market. For organic products, this standard covers production practices that respect natural cycles, minimise the environmental impact of human activity, and exclude the use of GMOs.

Organic production is also part of a wider supply chain that includes processing, distribution and trade. For products to be marketed as organic, the entire supply chain must be inspected and certified. Once the applicable requirements have been met, the certificate may be issued and the relevant logo may be used on certified products.
